The Lower Red Lion stands in Fishpool Street which was the main stage route
from London to the West of England. Until the early 19th century, as many as
forty stage coaches a day clattered past the doors of the Lower Red Lion
drawn by their teams of four horses. Apart from the cobble stones, Fishpool
Street is virtually unchanged since that time, and in the bar is an early
photograph in which all of the original buildings can still be identified.
